Find a Canadian Lawyer: Quick Search

Use this form to find a law office in Canada by TYPE OF LAWYER, CITY, COUNTY, and PROVINCE/STATE. You are required to select a TYPE OF LAWYER from either the Personal Users or Business Users drop down menus and a STATE/PROVINCE to complete your search.

To find a specific Canadian lawyer or firm by NAME, select the SEARCH BY NAME link. To search using additional criteria, such as LANGUAGE or COUNTRY, select the MORE SEARCH OPTIONS link.

  • Select TYPE OF LAWYER (Required)
    Select a TYPE OF LAWYER from either the Personal Users or Business Users drop down menus (chose only 1), OR if you do not find the type of lawyer you are looking for in either drop down menu, enter your legal term in the open field.

    Example: Selecting Family from the Personal Users drop down menu will provide a list of Canadian law firms who might deal with one or more of the following areas:
    Family Law
    Adoptions
    Child Custody
    Child Support
    Divorce
    Domestic Violence
    Visitation Rights

  • Enter CITY (Optional)
    Narrow your search by entering the CITY where you wish to locate a law office.

  • Select PROVINCE/STATE (Required)
    Select a PROVINCE OR STATE from the drop-down menu. U.S. States are listed first followed by Canadian Provinces.

  • SEARCH
    After determining your desired criteria, select SEARCH or hit the enter key. The system displays a list of the law offices that match your criteria. You may then browse through those listings or modify your search and resubmit it.

Find A Lawyer: Search by Name

This form allows you to search for a specific LAWYER NAME or FIRM NAME by NAME, CITY, COUNTRY and STATE/PROVINCE.

  • Enter NAME (Required)
    Enter either a Canadian LAWYER NAME or FIRM NAME in the appropriate fields.

    Search Tips for NAME Searching:

    • Try to enter the exact spelling of the Canadian lawyer or firm you wish to find. For LAWYER NAME, common nicknames are included in your results.
    • Canadian Lawyer Name Search Example: Stephen Jones
      - This search will return listing with Stephen, Steven, Steve.
    • The search is NOT case sensitive or order specific.
    • In either the FIRM NAME field, you can use boolean operators or wildcard characters to narrow or broaden your search.

    Boolean Operators:

    • Use the "OR" connector when entering multiple items like variations in the spelling of a name. Using an OR connector broadens your search.
    • Canadian Firm Name Search Example: Smith OR Jones
      - This search will yield results with the names Smith or Jones, but not both in the same entry.

    • Use "AND" to include more than one search term. Using AND narrows your search.
    • Firm Name Search Example: smith AND jones
      - This search will return listings with Smith and Jones in each entry.

    • If you're comfortable using Boolean operators you can use AND and OR in the same search.
    • Firm Name Search Example: Smith AND (Nelson OR Jones)
      - This search will return listings with Smith and Nelson and Smith and Jones.

    Wildcard Characters:

    • Use the "%" or "*" symbols as wildcard characters. You can use either before or after the text you wish to find. Be aware that using wildcards will usually return numerous listings which will take time to display.

    • Search Example: eri%
      - This search will include all names and spelling variations that begin with "eri." Results:
      Erik
      Erica
      Erin

    • Search Example: *thy
      - This search will find all words that end in "thy." Results:
      McCarthy
      Kathy
      Timothy

  • Enter CITY (Optional)
    Narrow your search by entering the CITY where you wish to locate the particular lawyer or firm.

  • Enter COUNTRY (Required)
    Enter the COUNTRY or select All Countries. The default is United States of America.

  • Enter STATE/PROVINCE (Optional)

  • SEARCH
    After determining your desired criteria, select SEARCH or hit the enter key. The system displays a list of the law offices or lawyers that match your criteria. You may browse through the listing or modify your search and resubmit it.

Find A Canadian Lawyer: More Search Options

This form allows you to search for a FIRM, LAWYER or both LAWYERS & FIRMS by selecting the appropriate radio button. LAWYERS & FIRMS is the choice by default. You will need to enter a TYPE OF LAWYER from either the Personal or Business drop down menu, a COUNTRY, and/or STATE/PROVINCE.

  • Select TYPE OF LAWYER
    Select a TYPE OF LAWYER. You can search on a primary heading to get broad results, or you can search on a secondary-level heading (where available) to obtain more specific results.

    Examples: Searching on Family Law from the Personal Users drop down menu will provide a list of lawyers or firms who might deal with one or more of the following areas:
    Family Law
    Adoptions
    Child Custody
    Child Support
    Divorce
    Domestic Violence
    Premarital Agreements
    Spousal Support
    Visitation Rights

    Searching on Divorce will list lawyers who deal only with divorce cases.

  • Enter CITY (Optional)
    Enter the CITY where you wish to locate a Canadian lawyer or law office.

  • Select STATE/PROVINCE (Required)
    Select a STATE or PROVINCE from the drop-down menu. U.S. States are listed first followed by Canadian Provinces.

  • Select LANGUAGE
    Select a LANGUAGE from the list to identify firms or Canadian lawyers with specific language fluency.

  • SEARCH
    After determining your desired criteria, select SEARCH or hit the enter key. The system displays a list of the law offices that match your criteria. You may then browse through those listings or modify your search and resubmit it.

Find A Canadian Lawyer Enter Another Legal Term

On both the QUICK and MORE SEARCH OPTIONS (Advanced Search) forms, users have the option to enter in a specific legal term instead of selecting from either the personal users or business user type of lawyer drop down menus. Enter your own TERM (for example, "securities").

Tips for using additional legal terms:

Enter adjacent search terms when you want to find the exact match in a law office listing.

  • Search Example: alternative dispute resolution
  • This search will yield Canadian law offices with lawyers who practice alternative dispute resolution.

Type in the "OR" connector when entering multiple items. Using an OR connector broadens your search.

  • Search Example: custody OR adoption
  • This search will yield listings of Canadian law offices that are associated with custody or adoption, but not necessarily both.

Use "AND" to include more than one search term. Using AND narrows your search.

  • Search Example: custody AND adoption
  • This search will return listings of Canadian law offices that are associated with custody and adoptions.

If you're comfortable using Boolean operators you can use AND and OR in the same search:

  • Search Example: custody AND (adoption OR divorce)
  • This search will return listings of Canadian law offices that are associated with custody and adoption AND custody and divorce.

Content Search

CONTENT SEARCH gives users the ability to keyword search Canadian-Lawyers.ca articles, tips, Ask A Canadian lawyer archives, community, and more. Enter a term, for example "tort", and select SEARCH. Browse the list of matching articles, message board responses, etc.
